Koh Kret is a small island in the middle of the Chao Phraya River just 45 minutes drive north of Bangkok. Koh Kret is located in the Nonthuburi province just outside of Bangkok province.
If you have any time in Bangkok you should make the effort to visit Koh Kret as it is a very peaceful island away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.
There are more than 20 Buddhist temples on Koh Kret and many local Thai from Bangkok visit this island on weekends and for Thai festivals. There is also a pottery village where you can buy some authentic Thai pottery.
One of the most important temples on Koh Kret is Wat Poramaiyikawat which is located in the northwestern corner of Koh Kret Island. At Wat Poramaiyikawat temple there are a few interesting Buddhist items including the Reclining Buddha which is located within the main temple building.
Also just outside the temple grounds, right next to the river is the leaning pogoda (pictured above). You will often see many Thai people here worshipping at the Leaning pagoda.
The best way to get to Koh Kret is to hire a car. You can do a very easy half day trip from Bangkok to Koh Kret. You can hire a car and drive for half a day for around 2500 Thai Baht. Most hotels can help you arrange a car and driver. The drive from the centre of Bangkok will take around 45 minutes. You will get dropped at Wat Bang Chak which also has some interested temples to visit.
At Wat Bang Chak there is a large sitting Buddha Statue over looking the river. Right in front of this Buddha statue is a small ferry pier where you can get a small ferry across to Koh Kret. There are regular ferries crossing. The cost for the ferry is 5 Baht per person and only takes a few minutes to cross.
On Koh Kret there are no cars, just small walking trails around the island. The island is only around 2 kilometers long and just over 1 kilometer wide. Along the walking trails there are some small shops selling large of arts and crafts and some very nice pottery.
There is a trail that circumnavigates the island which you can walk around in 5.2 kilometers. There are some motorcycle taxis on Koh Kret if you want to jump on the back to get taken anywhere on the island.
